The Central Maryland Railway: a G-Scale model railroad in Baltimore, MD

Welcome to the blog for the Central Maryland Railway, an outdoor G-Scale model railway currently somewhere on the spectrum between concept and reality. This blog is written by myself, Tom Mackay, and the idea is to illustrate the progress of the railroad, highlight interesting projects and to encourage others to join in, because model railroading is most fun when others are involved.

What I now call the Central Maryland Railway today dates its infancy back to my own, in the early 1990's when I began my G-scale train collection with a single New York Central Pacemaker box car. Over the years that car saw dedicated service hauling my dream of a G-scale railroad, enduring the wear and tear of more than two decades.

In the modern era, the railroad first took shape as the Ramapo Mountain Railroad, my first attempt at a garden railroad in my fathers yard in the mountains of Ringwood, NJ. This railroad supported almost 250ft of unpowered track in a dog-bone pattern with a passing siding mid-line. I will share more from this railroad over the course of time, sadly, it met its demise in 2019.

From approximately 2014-2017 the railroad also took the name of the Frostburg Southern Railroad. The idea was to emulate the operation of the Western Maryland Railway in the area of Allegany County, MD. During this time I developed new ideas for construction and operation of a garden railroad, which will be fully explained in separate posts. The Frostburg Southern never took much shape, but it is leading now to the development of the re-constituted Central Maryland.

The Central Maryland Railway operates as a subsidiary of the Mackay Railroad Holdings Corp (TMRX) and has two divisions currently, the Baltimore division, and the Lexington Division. I will endeavor to update this approximately every month as I advance the projects of the railroad and I may share various other G-Scale topics including other layouts and shows/meetings.

Please stay tuned!
